Birmingham Government Agencies

The government of Birmingham is a mayor-council form of government with a strong mayor. The city is led by a elected mayor and nine member council. The system replaces the previous city commission form of government that was in practice until 1962.

All new bills and laws must be proved by two thirds of the city council. Executive powers are in control of the Mayor's office. Neighborhood commissions are created which advise the council on matters related to liquor licenses, zoning changes, and other decisions that have an effect on any neighborhood.
