Montgomery History

The history of Montgomery begins in the 16th century. The city originated from two Indian towns named Towasa and Ikanatchati. The city served as the capital of Alabama State. In 1540, Hernando De Soto, a European, came to the area along with his expedition and stayed there for about a week. A century later, an expedition from Carolina came across the Alabama River. In 1716, James McQueen, a Scottish trader, became a permanent resident of Montgomery. During this period, the Indian Reserve and West Florida divided the area and a boundary line was drawn which crosses the city.

Birmingham History

The city of Birmingham was founded in 1871 by a group of cotton gin promoters who sold several lots that bear the yet to be created crossing of South and North Alabama railroads and the Alabama and Chattanooga railroads. The area was known as the Jones Valley and was flanked by mountain ridges of the Appalachian foothills. The area also had numerous rivers, lakes and bodies of water in the region. The area where the crossings were situated showed that the area had huge deposits of iron ore, limestone and coal, the three important raw materials used in making steel.

Tuscaloosa History

In ancient times, Tuscaloosa was considered part of an area called the Deep South. Inhabited by Native Indians 12,000 years ago, these traditional hunter-gatherers were dependent on large animals for their sustenance. When such large animals became extinct, these Native Indians resorted to agriculture.

Their agrarian culture inspired a lot of associated beliefs. Even now a lot of artifacts relative to their belief system are found in museums. Beside the banks of rivers in Mississippi, large earthworks stand testimony of these ancient people.

After the war of 1812, the white population increased their presence in this area. Log cabins, which served as place of residence, started to come about. Most of these were in and around the Creek village. By 1817, Alabama was surveyed. It officially became a territory in that year. Two years later Tuscaloosa was incorporated as a town and included in the territory of Alabama by the territorial legislature.

Mobile History

The city of Mobile has its own history since 1702. It served as Louisiana's 1st Capital of the French colony. Basically it was founded to give shape to its claim on Louisiana. The Gulf Coast played home to the Roman Catholic Parish of Mobile which came into existence in the year 1703.

Huntsville History

In 1805, John Hunt settled in the area that is known today as Huntsville. At the time, it was called Twickenham after the home of Alexander Pope in England. However, on November 25, 1911 the city was renamed Huntsville. The city has increased in size along the banks of the Tennessee River with the first munitions factories that became textile mills. Today this makes a major part of the city in the south.

The city was originally laid out in a grid like fashion with streets running northeast to southwest in direction. The town of Huntsville was officially incorporated in 1811 as the first town in Alabama. The city honors the date of 1805 as its birth date and celebrated its bicentennial in 2005.

The railroad and cotton industries generated rapid wealth and much growth in the early days in the region.
